Book review: Officer Elvis by Gary Gusick welcome to the world of Elvis Presley

Shrug on your white sequinned suit, kick off your Blue Suede Shoes, lay back in your pink cadillac and prepare to laugh and chuckle your way through this delightful book set in the world of Elvis tribute Acts in Mississippi.  The beauty of Officer Elvis is that it doesn't take itself too seriously and yet still delivers a compelling mystery read with a wealth of Elvis anecdotes and enough info on Elvis memorabilia to keep the average Elvis fan in raptures for years.

When Officer (sorry Detective) Elvis  (AKA Detective Tommy
Reynolds) is blown up in his pink Elvis Cadillac after a gig the suspects range from a dodgy club owner whose plans to open a gay club in Mississippi were scuppered by Officer Elvis and the God Squad, a meth dealer turned catfish conservator put out of business by the deceased and the director of the Elvis Tribute Act Club whose high school sweetheart was stolen by Tommy.
The flamboyant plot deepens when a PA is murdered and Detective Darla Cavannah discovers that the intended victim was 'Elvis the Extractor' (a dentist who moonlights as an Elvis impersonator).  With the link established Darla proceeds to discover more deceased Elvis acts.  All that's left now is for the motive to be established before anyone else dies.
Officer Elvis is delivered with sharp, self deprecating deep South
humour, a smooth flow and a genuine feel good atmosphere.  I swear you'll be humming Elvis songs with a smile on your face long after you've finished reading this.  It's enjoyable light hearted and fun with an interesting insight into Elvis memorabilia for the uninitiated.
