I know Bradford like the back of my hand... and so does A.A. Dhand.  In the second of his DI Harry Virdee thrillers, Girl Zero, Dhand leads is through Bradford's underbelly and believe me when I say that by the end of it you'll never look at swimming pools, bleach or car jacks in quite the same way again.

Girl Zero starts a year after his debut novel Streets of Darkness, on the eve of the Hindu and Sikh festival of Diwali.  But this year, for Harry and his family there will be no celebratory fireworks as his niece's body is discovered in a derelict school.

The discovery of his dead niece underlines the fact that Harry's choice to marry a Muslim girl has made him estranged from his family... once more Harry is the one to bring devastating news to his family's doorstep.

Determined to avenge his niece's death whilst simultaneously having to curtail his brother, Ronnie's desire for violent revenge, Harry is led on a chase that leads him into the darkest realms of the city's violent crime.  Working outside the parametres of the police force Harry uncovers a trail of child abduction and murder to its unlikely end.

This is a high octane pulsating read that explores our city warts and all, however it is also a quest for redemption.  The sub plots of Harry and his wife, Saima's desire to reunite with their families is alluringly poignant. Dhand's gift for creating characters that leap from the pages and grab you by the throat (literally in some cases) is second to none.  An excellent second book, highly recommended by The Crime Warp!
