I can't quite believe that Echoes in Death is the 44th Dallas/Roarke 'In Death' book by the very versatle JD Robb (otherwise known as Nora Roberts). For a fair few years now these books have been some of my favourite reads and Echoes In Death is up there with the best of them...
Eve and Roarke on their way home from a charity event all but stumble on a naked battered woman wandering in the freezing temperatures of 2060's New York. Turns out she has been brutally raped and tortured and her husband, a prominent surgeon has been murdered. Lieutenant Dallas soon links this case to other home invasions where husbands and wives have been attacked.
There are many things that attract me to the Dallas/Roarke series of books. The chemistry between Roarke and Dallas is palpable, the gentle humour that Robb so skillfully threads through the book and the well developed subsidiary characters all draw me in and set the scene for an enjoyable gripping read. However the main think that hooks me is Eve Dallas herself. Her tragic backstory, her strength as a female protagonist, her fierce commitment to her victims and her vulnerability all make her a mesmerising character.
Echoes in Death , like all the 'In Death ' books is all about the victim. Robb takes us through the entire investigative process with Eve on the streets doing her 'thang' as well as within the walls of the NYPSD where the futuristic 'links', 'Blockers' and 'Floats' etc are thrown in to create a vision of a futuristic New York.
Eve's thought processes are thoroughly explained and we are privvy to her innermost thoughts.
Echoes in Death is a fantastic read and I have no hesitation in giving it a strong 5 stars.
