Book Review: The Advent Killer by Alastair Gunn

This is British Author Alastair Gunn’s debut novel and  if the standard of writing in The Advent Killer is anything to go by he has  a promising career ahead of him.

Acting DCI Antonia Hawkins after a disastrous affair culminating in the end of her marriage, is determined to prove herself in her new role.  However, a serial killer is loose on the streets of London and Hawkin’s team are having difficulty getting a handle on the killer.  Whilst to date he has killed on Sunday’s in Advent, his Motus Operandi varies with each victim.

This book is satisfyingly subtley, yet with a healthy dose of tension and a lot of really scary well written scenes.  The characters have distinctive voices and I just loved the comic element of .Antonia’s mother’s messages on the answering machine

Near the end of the book I was kicking myself for getting the murderer wrong and this just ratcheted up the tension – as did the next couple of twists that I again never saw coming.

If Police Procedurals with a strong female main character are your bag, grab a copy of The Advent Killer … actually… buy a few – they’d make a great Christmas gift for any Crime Fiction lover.
