Book Reviews: Late summer reads: A few books to grab before the nights start drawing in.

With only a few weeks left to lounge around on the beach, entertain the kids and sit with a glass of wine and a good book out doors here's a round up of a few more summer reads to terrify, entertain and enthrall you: chilling psychological thriller, a childhood come back to haunt you, familial secrets and a cold case resurfaced.

The Mistake I Made by Paula Daly (27th Aug 2015)
This is one of those reads where you think 'God how easily could this have been me or someone I know?'. Roz Toovey is in dire financial straits.  her husband's left her with a pile of debts, her business as a physio has gone down the tubes, the bailiffs have been and her son is grieving the loss of his pet dog... then an opportunity to free herself from her debts is dangled in front of her nose and her response leads to a series of events she couldn't have imagined in her wildest nightmares.  Apart from being a bit excessive on the physio techie terms this was a good fast paced psychological thriller that incorporates the moral choices we're foced to make day by day.  Compelling  and thought provoking.

Redemption Road by Lisa Ballantyne (released in PB July
2015)
This is a book that pretty much does what it says on the tin.  It's a book of Redemption.  When Margaret is rescued from her blazing car by a man with disfiguring burns it makes her have flashbacks to a time in her childhood that she has suppressed in her mind for all these years.  Thoughtfully written and representative of the culture in Glasgow ganglands of the 1980's. Available in PB £3.85 Kindle £3.99 & audio download £16.62

Those We Left Behind by Stuart Neville (release date 25th
June 2015)
DCI Serena Flanagan newly returned to work after a cancer scare discovers that Ciaran Devine, a boy who beat his foster parent to death years earlier is due for release form the Young Offenders institution. At the time Serena was convinced of his innocence despite his confession and of his elder brother Thomas's guilt, now when the son of Ciaran's victim is killed after an altercation with the two brother's Serena is once more convinced Thomas is pulling the strings and using Ciaran as the fall guy.  Set in Belfast Neville references 'The Troubles' through his dialogue and descriptions of place.  However this is very much a post troubles story with Northern Ireland's past as a backdrop to the wider story.  A really good read with credible characters.  I hope to read more DCI Serena Flanagan stories.
Available on Amazon Kindle £6.02 or HB £10.99
