Book Review: Prayer for The Dead by James Oswald, 5th in the DI Tony McLean supernatural crime fiction books!

In Prayer for the Dead journalist Ben Stephenson is found murdered  in the depths of the Gilmerton Coves and DI Tony McLean is forced into an unlikely alliance with his old enemy journalist Jo Galbraith in order to solve the crime.

Whilst McLean dismisses as misdirection the  masonic references to The Brotherhood and Baphomet, drawn in the victim's blood at the site, he has an uneasy feeling that, despite his skepticism, unseen forces are once more at large in the streets of Edinburgh.

Meanwhile we see the welcome return of larger than life character, psychic Madam Rose.  Madame Rose  subject to systematic bullying and clearly distressed, asks for assistance from DI McLean.  Unfortunately, the Psychic's enemies are well out of McLean's control

What always excites me about James Oswald’s books is the unique way he engages the reader in a police procedural that goes above and beyond our  usual expectations of the crime fiction genre.  His interesting merging of crime and the supernatural is intoxicating as he skillfully demonstrates that Evil is Evil whether man made or by the design of forces beyond out ken.

Edinburgh once more comes alive in Oswald's capable hands and the delightful Gilmerton Coves will certainly be on my to do list for my next visit to 'Auld Reekie'

A great read for fans of crime fiction who like a ghostly creepy element thrown in for good measure!
