Book Review: The Soul Of Discretion by Susan Hill - chilling, hard hitting and unsettling!

Kindle £6.99 HB £12.50

This is the 8th Simon Serrailler book and in my opinion one of the darkest and most chilling of Susan Hill’s Serrailler series to date.
Simon goes undercover in prison to extract information from a convicted child abuser in order to bring down a paedophile ring consisting of eminent and respected men.  Meanwhile, Simon’s family are in various states of turmoil with his step-mother and father’s marriage in trouble, his sister’s career in flux and his live in partner making big business decisions.

The Soul of Discretion takes us into the very dark world of abuse and domination, from Paedophilia to rape to wife beating and, perhaps because it’s set in the world of an upper middle class urban community it has an unsettling frisson to it which sent chills right through me.   I like the family ‘stories’ which form the sub plots and in this instance I particularly liked the sensitive, yet hard hitting way Hill addresses the issues of ‘acquaintance rape’ and the way her characters behave so realistically.

For me this is one of her best crime books to date and I thoroughly enjoyed it – it is a page turner with some strong messages and a thrillingly poignant ending!
