Book reviews : A Quartet of romantic, yet gritty crime thrillers by a Quintet of women writer's Mary Burton, Beverley Barton, Karen Rose, Lisa Jackson and Nancy Bush

Lisa Jackson & Nancy Bush
These are A Quintet of Women Crime Fiction Writers who add a touch of romance, raw sex, raunchiness or  even the supernatural to their crime books.
If you like your crime with a romantic flavour this quartet of books by a quintet of women is for you.

In the last few years I've become drawn to Crime Fiction that is cross- genre -  by that I mean that whilst the 'criminal' element is strong their is a also a strong sub genre running through it.  In the case of the women writer's I've chosen it
Beverley Barton
ranges  from Lisa Jackson/Nancy Bush's supernatural crime  Wicked Ways to Beverley Barton's  raunchy I'll Be Watching You  and from Mary Burton's gentle romance based Cover Your Eyes  to Karen Rose's sexy, raunchy Closer Than You Think.
Mary Burton

What these writer's have in common is the ability to write gritty crime involving evil serial killers whilst focussing on the humanity of life through the most basic of human traits- Love & Attraction.

So Here they are : The Quartet

I’ll be Watching You by Beverley Barton

Racy, sexy and thrilling.  When Reed Conway is released from prison after serving fifteen years for a crime he didn’t commit he is determined to prove his innocence and find the guilty party.
However, someone wants the past to remain secret and a thrilling tale of family intrigue, secrets, dilemmas , vendettas revenge and one sick killer emerge.
Barton, as her fans have come to expect, delivers convincing characters, a believable storyline and a great twist at the end.  This book is all about jealousy, human frailty and romance- loved it!

Cover Your Eyes by Mary Burton

Set in the Country & Western territory of Nashville Rachel Wainright a defense attorney whose client has spent thirty years in prison for the heinous murder of a rising Country singer is convinced of his innocence and demands a DNA test to prove it.
Unfortunately Deke Morgan, the Detective responsible for pursuing this is the son of Buddy Morgan, the detective who put her client away originally. Things become even more complicated when another young country singer is murdered in a similar way and links between the old murder and the current murder crop up.

As usual Burton keeps us on our toes with a series of twists and turns that are convincingly chilling.  Brilliantly interwoven storylines result in a satisfying crime rom read.

Wicked Ways by Lisa Jackson and Nancy Bush

After a slow start this book picked up pace and I was really glad I stuck with it .  Elizabeth (who possesses pre cognitive skills)discovers her husbands infidelity and shortly afterwards he and his mistress are killed in a car accident.  Elizabeth become convinced her ‘thought/wishes’ are to blame and it seems the police do too.
Meanwhile Ravinia Routledge ( a young women brought up in an all female martriarchal family of psychics) is on a mission to find and protect her cousin Elizabeth.  Hooking up with PI Rex Kinston, Ravinia is determined to rescue Elizabeth from evil.  The dynamics between Rex and Ravinia move the plot along nicely
An entertaining read with strong characters (Ravinia is loveable and entertaining, whilst Rex is responsible and attractive), a surprising plot twist and a nice chink of romance as well as the thrill of the supernatural.
Enjoyeable, not too predictable and not unbelievably supernatural- I look forward to the sequel in the Kingston/ Routledge  supernatural crime series

Closer Than You Think  by Karen Rose

Another great serial killer novel from  the pen of KarenRose.
Bad mouthed by her cop ex husband and stalked and threatened byby a sex offender Dr faith Corcoran fears for her life.  Her grandmother’s death gives her the opportunity to change her identity and move to Ohio.  However, from the frying pan she jumps straight into an inferno when she becomes a ‘person of note’ in an incvestigation onto a n abductionand the murder of many young women.  Agent
Deacon Novak from the FBI, is attracted to Faith and convinced of her innocence in wrong doing.  However with the body count mounting and threats made to Faiths life he has his work cut out to discover where her family links overlap with the killer.
Suspenseful, Xrated in bits, tense in others and with well rounded characters this is a book I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish
