Book Review: The Killing Lessons by Saul Black, Desperation sets in as detectives, after three years, still can't catch their killers!
After three long years hunting for a two serial killer's working together, detectives are still clueless and worse the body count is increasing. The only link between the murders is the fact that the killers leave something behind each time.
Detective Valerie Hart, verging on alcoholism and an emotional wreck pushes herself to find the killers despite a hostile FBI agent and the return of the love of her life.
What stands out most in The Killing Lessons is the way it's written. Saul Black, effectively tells the story from various points of view which pushes the narrative forward at a fast pace. His uncanny ability to jump from the mind of a warped serial killer to a traumatised ten year old girl to a veteran detective running on steam to a frightened captured woman is testament to his creativity.
I loved this book. I loved the way I was taken through the
story with no holds barred. I loved the fantastic characterisation. I loved the mounting tension as the desperate race to find the killers is on and I loved that the nomadic killers took us from San Francisco to Colorado to Utah and back again. The pace left me breathless, the characters are convincing and the story is a real adrenalin rush. The dynamics between the two serial killers Xander and Paulie reminds me of the dynamics between George and Lennie in Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men (Not that I'm suggesting that either Steinbeck character was a serial killer), the big difference being Xander's psychopathy which, we become privy to bit by bit but that Paulie (the Lennie type character) only suspects. The Killing Lessons is definitely one of those unputdownable, page turners that keeps you up all night because there's never a good place to take a break. If you like good strong female protagonists you get them in The Killing Lessons. Recommended to fans of Chris Carter, Zoe Sharp and Lee Childs.
