Topical Debate: Some thoughts on the creative process

Some thoughts on the creative process:   A good book, in whatever genre, is a totality, in that it hangs together, it makes sense, all components fit. By all components I mean style, the characters, the plot, the setting, the word count, etc. we usually focus on individual elements, working hard on these, however, the work has to hold together, like a complete outfit in fashion, or a painting, if you like art. I now think that the best way to achieve that cohesion is to imagine the whole book before you type even one word. Not in detail of course, we change things all the time, but an impression, a taste, an image; the mood, the feel of the book. If we spent more time thinking about the book before we even started with the outline or the chapter plan, would it all flow more easily? Would we naturally produce the best style for the task, draw the characters in the appropriate way, describe the setting so that it becomes an integral part of the story without overwhelming t...

Does Crime Fiction Need More clean- living cops?

Nick Gargan, Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset police argues that crime fiction portrays too many damaged cops.and referred to real life detectives modelling themselves on , eg Rebus.   http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/apr/29/crime-fiction-clean-living-cops-police-chief Ken Stott as Ian Rankin's REBUS I think Nick Gargan has done the credibility of  Police Detectives a great disservice by implying that fictional characters influence their policing techniques more  than their Police Training. Bruce Willis as  maverick cop John McLane in the Die Hard series  Personally I am concerned that a senior police officer whilst recognising some 'fictional detective traits' in serving Officers within the Police Force, finds his only recourse is to blame gritty Crime fiction for this phenomenom.  If such Mavericks exist within the police force then  is it not up to the Police Force to train/retrain their Officers? Howe...

Buy a Kindle book and a packet of crisps and still have change from a £1   ?                                   I'm the perennial bargain hunter.   Charity shops, car boot sales and pound shops send out subliminal messages specially to lure me in.   However, I was uneasy at the thought of buying a brand new book albeit on kindle for 20p.   It just seemed wrong to me.   For goodness sake Oxfam charges at least £1 for a used book and that goes to charity.   How can Kindle charge only 20p? Now, if I owned a Kindle I sure as hell would buy it because I love Peter James’ books and as I freely admit I'm a bargain hunter, but at the back of my mind is the niggling thought that a book written by a writer of his calibre should cost more than 20p.   Does it undervalue the whole craft of wri...
