It's great to have the chance to delve into the mind of Michelle Kidd's DCI Jack MacIntosh, so without further ado let's get grilling him. Tell us a little about Jack MacIntosh’s background Detective Inspector Jack MacIntosh is the central character in my DI Jack MacIntosh series (unsurprisingly!). He works for the Metropolitan Police. He is a character with many different facets. The main element of his background is that as a child aged 4 he witnessed the aftermath of his mother’s death by discovering her body hanging from a light fitting. Both he and his younger brother, Stuart, were then taken into the foster care system and were separated for much of their childhood and early adult lives. Jack fared well, joining the police force, but his brother wasn’t so lucky. I won’t spoil the story any more! The Fields of Wheat moment… What is the most rebellious thing Jack has ever done? In the fourth book in the series – ‘The Bishop’ – due for release in January 2021 – Ja...

Detectives In The Dock : Vaseem Khan's delightful Mumbai detective, Inspector Ashwin Chopra (Retd.) Yes, that's right. He's the one with the elephant!

Image
Chopra grew up in a village in rural India, moved to Mumbai aged 17 to train as a policeman, and has spent 30 years as a police officer in the subcontinent’s ‘city of dreams’. He has seen everything in Mumbai, both the light and dark.  He is ambivalent about the new wealth flooding the country, and the influence of globalisation which has transformed places like Mumbai; he is particularly bothered by how vast inequalities persist in the city. He has been married to Poppy for 24 years; they are childless, but this has only brought them closer together. When a baby elephant arrives on their doorstep, at first Chopra has no idea what to do with it... but gradually a bond develops. The Fields of Wheat moment… What is the most rebellious thing Inspector Chopra has ever done?  Available here In the first book The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra , Chopra is forced into early retirement (he’s only in his late forties). On his last day, th...

Detectives In The Dock: B A Steadman's Dan Hellier

Image
In the dock today is B A Steadman's DI Dan Hellier. Here's a little background on the suspect DI Dan Hellier is in his early thirties at the start of the series. He grew up in the Exeter suburbs and attended local Exeter University, where he studied Geography, got bored and decided to join the police. He is keen, nervous, but a good-hearted, if quick-tempered man. The first book, Death and Deception begins when Dan arrives back home to Devon from his rising career in the London Met under a cloud – he assaulted the new boyfriend of his ex-partner. Rather than sacking a promising detective, the powers that be transfer him to Exeter. With a lot to prove, and still smarting from being dumped, Dan expects a peaceful time in his home city. That is the last things he gets.
