book Review: The Final Minute by Simon Kernick. Take a deep breath before you start because you won't be able to once you open the book.
The Final Minute by Simon Kernick races along at breakneck speed. It's exciting, bold and sexy and I promise that once you've opened it, you'll just keep on reading till the last page.
An amnesiac being cared for in remote countryside by his sister and his nurse begins to suspect things aren't entirely as he has been told. With flashbacks to a tragic scene and increasing uncertainty about his 'companion's' Matt (or Sean Egan as is his real name) decides to take some time out. On his return the farmhouse has become a killing field of dead bodies and he is greeted by a beautiful assassin and her partner. This is the point that Sean runs!
If the amnesiac link makes you expect a taut psychological thriller a la Before I Go To Sleep you'll be disappointed for The Final Minute is action, tense action and even more tense action all the way. Sean Egan enlists the help of detective Tina Boyd, who as fans of Simon Kernick will know, is a live wire of flammable material herself.
i think apart from the breakneck pace, what I love most about The Final Minute is that Kernick's characters have real flaws that make them so much more human. Sean Egan isn't a likeable character; he's opportunistic, self serving and a smooth manipulator. Tina Boyd on the other hand is dauntless, straight as an arrow and well aware of her faults and weaknesses. It's this combination of honesty, action and human weakness that drive Kernick's novels forwards with such force. I read this in one sitting and loved every thrilling minute. If you like explosive, high octane thrillers this is a must read.
