Book Review: The Optician's Wife by Betsy Reavley (release date June 18th 2016); a psychological thriller that pushes the boundaries

If the cover of  The Optician's Wife doesn't draw you in, then, once you open the book, the characters certainly will, for Reavley's main characters are deliciously unlikeable, strangely compelling and wonderfully alluring.  They draw you into their world and keep you hooked right to the very end.

The Optician's Wife  immerses you in the '80's of Wham
and Frankie Goes to Hollywood - a fantastic era in my opinion.  A young Deborah,  recently bereaved, uprooted from her childhood home and school, with an alcoholic father and a disinterested younger sister, is unpopular, lonely and a victim of circumstance.
So, when the charismatic optician Larry shows her attention, the naïve 17 year old is hooked.  Then a series of murders occur, involving the removal of the victim's eyes and Reavley takes us on a journey with a series of twists and turns that will have you guessing right up to the climatic end.
The Optician's Wife is a deep and disturbing exploration of human nature and the dark turns it can take.  Reavley consistently takes us into the darkest corners of the human mind, forces us to question our responses and compels us to keep on reading.
The Opticians Wife is one of those rare books that, in equal
measure, entice and repel you.  Reavley's unwavering examination of her characters behaviour and motives makes for an uncomfortable, edge of the seat read.  This is a must read book for those who love the unsettling feeling you get in a well written noir crime novel.
