Book Review: The Darkest Secret by Alex Marwood
The
Darkest Secret exposes the world of the privileged
rich and their frailties, their secrets and how families and friends reunite in
self interest and grief.
When she’s fifteen years old Milly’s one of her 3
year old twin step sisters disappears.
Now 13 years later her father has died leaving Milly to accompany her
remaining step sister Ruby to the funeral, deal with her grief and confront
past secrets.
As we examine Coco’s disappearance through the perspectives of
alternate characters we are left with the unpalatable knowledge that the
unlikeable characters remain unlikeable and that secrets revolving around the
incestuous friendships and familial relationships could have crushing effects on
those left behind. As the funeral day
draws nearer the tension thickens and revelations twists and turns will leave
you breathless.
A probing distinctive read with a plethora of
characters that in turn grated, amused and evoked sympathy. Recommended for those who enjoy psychological
thrillers with the added edge of a perceptive writer who isn’t afraid to
forensically examine the complexities of damaged relationships, expose the
innermost demons of her characters and penetrate each emotional defence. Satisfyingly detailed, deliciously realistic
and wonderfully compelling.
