Blog Tour: Silent Scream - Angela Marsons

Today on the blog we have the wonderful Angela Marsons, and we're celebrating the publication of the paperback edition of her fabulous novel Silent Scream.

Even the darkest secrets can’t stay buried forever…

Five figures gather round a shallow grave. They had all taken turns to dig. An adult-sized hole would have taken longer. An innocent life had been taken but the pact had been made. Their secrets would be buried, bound in blood …

Years later, a headmistress is found brutally strangled, the first in a spate of gruesome murders which shock the Black Country.
But when human remains are discovered at a former children’s home, disturbing secrets are also unearthed. D.I. Kim Stone fast realises she’s on the hunt for a twisted individual whose killing spree spans decades.
As the body count rises, Kim needs to stop the murderer before they strike again. But to catch the killer, can Kim confront the demons of her own past before it’s too late?

Fans of Rachel Abbott, Val McDermid and Mark Billingham will be gripped by this exceptional new voice in British crime fiction.

With over 3000 5* reviews on Amazon, the no 1 bestselling novel Silent Scream, formerly only available on eBook, is now available in paperback.

ANGELA'S POST:

You Know You’re a Crime Writer When…

I have recently come to the conclusion that crime writers are not quite like normal people but as that statement may be libellous I’ll keep it to just me.

I’ve noticed a definite change in the way that I think and perceive the people and objects around me since turning to crime (fictionally) of course!
These are my own observations and you know when that you’re a crime writer:-

1.      When you look at inanimate objects such as an iron, a colander, a cheese grater and wonder how they would fare as a murder weapon.  More worrying is when you ask your unsuspecting partner if you can possibly try them out.  For research purposes – obviously.

2.      When you buy a rug with a huge red flower at the centre because it reminds you of a crime scene. And then you get your partner to pose with tomato ketchup on her foot and a knife close by for photographs.  Yes, I really did!
3.      When you picture all the different ways you are going to ‘fictionally’ murder the person at the other end of the customer service helpline on which you’ve been holding for three and a half hours.  This situation alone has prompted all kinds of creative scenarios in my head.

4.      When your Amazon ‘items bought’ basket has made the watch list of the FBI, MI5 and CIA for containing titles such as ‘committing murder undetected’, ‘ingenious ways of disposing of a corpse’ and ‘fatal stab sites around the body’.

5.      When you try to picture the wound left by anything with a sharp edge and a trip around the kitchen section of the supermarket prompts the need to buy a notebook and make notes.  Immediately.

6.      When the tales of woe from your family and friends develop into plot lines for your next book.  Followed by the constant denials and protestations of ‘it was so strange how I’d written that just before you told me that story’. Yes, incredibly coincidental.

7.      When you read a non-crime book and start seeing the perfect places to include a particularly gruesome and bloody murder scene or someone picks up a bread knife and you just hope…
 8.      When you view every new place you visit as a potential site for a body to be found.  You make a return visit to explore access and egress points and even ask the proprietors if they’d like to be in your next book.
 9.      You read a detailed post mortem report and think only of the possibilities of plot twists, stomach contents, rectal thermometers and trace evidence.

10.  When you realise you are paying an astronomical sky subscription and the only picture that is ever on your screen is the Crime Channel.
After reading this post back I have now realised that I have two options – seek help or continue to write crime.  Crime it is, then!

MY REVIEW

For any of you that haven’t read this book, what are you waiting for? It’s brilliant. This novel moves so fast you’ll be handing on by your coat tails. The narrative is excellent, I was hooked from the first page. Some of it was hard to read, some of it made me smile, but it was always absorbing. The tension built up nicely, and there were plenty of twists to keep me on my toes. The relationship between the characters really worked for me. The characters themselves are very well written, and develop nicely throughout the book, especially the lead character, DI Kim Stone

Kim Stone is definitely someone I would want on my side. To quote from the book: ‘she’s not in the habit of employing sensitivity with her team members. She had enough trouble conjuring it up for the general public’.  This certainly sums her up, she is tough, with a no nonsense approach that I loved. She just wants to get the job done regardless of the consequences. A fabulous character. I liked the way her backstory is filtered throughout the book, giving the reader an insight into this supposedly cold, but surprisingly caring woman. You just know that she means business.

The story is gripping, and the writing is exceptional. I think you can tell I liked this book. I just couldn’t put it down. It is definitely a five star read, I would give it more if I could.
