Book Review: The Ghost Fields by Elly Griffiths - The Seventh in the Dr Ruth Galloway series and in this one wee Katie turns five and starts school. Where has the time gone since we first met her?

I love the Elly Griffiths Dr Ruth Galloway, forensic archaelogy series and The Ghost Fields is no exception.  As well as the welcome return of  familiar characters; some crabby(DCINelson), some eccentric (Cathbad), some egotistical (Phil) and some down to earth (Ruth) what Elly deliver's is an excellent story backed up by impeccable research which she shares with the reader throughout the story in a non 'text book' way.

In The Ghost Fields we learn about the many airbases situated in Norfolk during World War 2, some British, some American and the stories of some of these airmen who risked their lives in a battle against the odds of survival.  In and amongst that Elly shares with us the history of Norfolk stretching back to the Bronze age and how lineage can be dated from now back through the ages to that time through advances in DNA research- thoroughly fascinating.

When a body is discovered in a crashed WW2 airplane  by a property developer on Devil's Hollow Ruth is called in.  However she soon discovers that the pilot body has been posed in the plane and has a bullet hole in his head.  The dead soldier is soon identified as Fred Blackstock brother of local landed gentry who was supposedly killed in action the week prior to the plane crashing in the fields.
The pace soon increases as people are attacked, the media become involved and DNA testing links DS David Clough to the Blackstock clan and as ever the Norfolk weather becomes a central character as it plays a major role in the story with the commencement of the well documented St Judes Storm of 2013.

As ever Elly Griffiths tells a damn good story, is true to her characters and keeps her reader's rapt throughout. Her obvious regard for Norfolk and its' heritage shines through.
Recommended for those who like a bit more than just a police procedural, those who're interested in forensic archaeology or indeed anyone after a really good unputdownable read for a spring evening.
