I made the very silly mistake of starting You Can Run by Steve Mosby, whilst on a writing retreat on my own in a remote Lancashire cottage in the middle of the night with the rain pounding the windows.... I did not sleep well!  And that's exactly why I would recommend this book (albeit with the caveat - don't read it in solitude!) for anybody with a fascination for a good serial killer read.

One day, by chance a truck crashes into the garage of a quiet suburban house revealing a captive woman inside.
Further investigation reveals hidden bodies in the cellar.  All the evidence points to the Red River killer who has been active for years, sending letters to the detectives investigating the case, but never leaving a body to be discovered... until now.  You Can Run is in the same league as Chris carter's An Evil Mind, but, what sets it apart is that, throughout, we are left with a brooding awareness of the victims... not just the murdered women but also their families. It is that emphasis that lifts You Can Run to another level.

You Can Run  is layered with stories among stories and through that , Mosby pays homage to the power of creativity as a provider of succour, as a tool for vengeance, as a vehicle for remorse and as an escape from reality.  He articulates what every storyteller wants to express; the power of the written word and it is done with such sensitivity and aplomb that I was, at times (when I wasn't bricking it), moved to tears.

You Can Run is a triumph in the creepy serial killer, edge of your seat  sort of read.  It starts off with the same impetus that drives the book forward to a satisfying end.  The characters are deliciously diverse, from the retiring slightly awkward Will Turner with a secret he must keep hidden at all costs, to the direct and ambitious Emma Beck determined not to let her partner's awkwardness affect her chances of promotion.
The writing is beautifully haunting, almost poetic, and chilling in equal measure. Steve Mosby is definitely a writer I will be reading more of. A Highly recommended read by The Crime Warp
