Book Review: Summer Of Ghosts by PD Viner a haunting, thrilling, spiritual and uplifting read

The Summer of Ghosts is the second in the Tom Bevans series, the first being The Last Winter of Dani Lancing. Don’t worry if you’ve not read the first, I hadn’t, and it didn’t get in the way of the story.

After suffering a major meltdown, Tom Bevans returns to head the Ares unit (responsible for solving murders) however he is haunted by the unsolved murders of three teenage girls four years previously. When Franco, a brutal Zimbabwean drug Lord’s daughter is abducted he calls in a debt owed by

Bevans. When it seems to link to the four year old murders, Bevans and Franco become involved in chasing the serial killer.

What appealed to me about this book was the skillful way Viner weaves in the characters back stories, taking us back to Franco’s Zimbabwean roots at the time of Robert Mugabe and of course to the twenty years Bevans dedicated to searching for Dani Lancing’s killer. I loved the spiritual element of the book which seems to be tom Bevans driving force.

Summer of Ghosts is full of action, full of emotion and has a couple of brilliant twists towards the end that give Tom Bevans (The Sad Man) a real edge as a character- you leave knowing Bevans is much more than just a ‘Sad Man’.
