Book Review: Captured by Neil Cross author of crime TV series Luther – A Tarantino - style story of a man’s bid to set things right before his death.

Kenny ‘Happy’ Drummond, given weeks to live embarks on a journey to rectify any past mistakes in his life for the people who matter to him.
When he initially fails to locate his childhood protector Callie he delves deeper only to discover that she’s disappeared and her husband is suspected of being responsible.  With seizures debilitating him he embarks on a radical course of action with dark repercussions.

Captured is a psychological thriller written with dark tension.   Cross successfully encapsulates Kenny’s increasing fragility with his deteriorating health and his almost manic determination to resolve Callie’s disappearance.  His authentic portrayal of a man’s last few weeks is both poignant and mildly disturbing.  Captured is well written and tense with unexpected twists and turns, a delightful double twist and a poignant ending.

I loved the brooding darkness that permeated Cross’s exploration of how the prospect of imminent death can affect the psyche.  Witnessing Kenny’s deterioration as a human being is in equal measures totally believable and completely rational whilst simultaneously being horrifically poignant.

A good read with an interesting storyline.
