Does Crime Fiction Need More clean- living cops?

Nick Gargan, Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset police argues that crime fiction portrays too many damaged cops.and referred to real life detectives modelling themselves on , eg Rebus.   http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/apr/29/crime-fiction-clean-living-cops-police-chief

I think Nick Gargan has done the credibility of  Police Detectives a great disservice by implying that fictional characters influence their policing techniques more  than their Police Training.

Personally I am concerned that a senior police officer whilst recognising some 'fictional detective traits' in serving Officers within the Police Force, finds his only recourse is to blame gritty Crime fiction for this phenomenom.  If such Mavericks exist within the police force then  is it not up to the Police Force to train/retrain their Officers?

However, in my own observations of the Police I have yet to see anyone modelling themselves on John Rebus, John Maclane,  Luther or indeed  Harry Hole patrolling our streets.  Have you?

As for Crime Fiction shaping the public's opinion of corruption and rule breaking within the force... Well,  in light of the Stephen Lawrence case and The Hillsborough fiasco could it be that crime writer's base some of their ideas on real life?

One of the points that Mr Gargan misses completely is that in 99% of Police Procedural fiction the baddy is caught and punished.  This in itself demonstrates a distinct moral code in the vein of when Good V Evil - good wins.

Just an extra thought

Do surgeons feel that Mills and Boon Hospital Romances make their staff model themselves on the characters.

How many teachers model themselves on Waterloo Road?

Do those who read Historic fiction generally act like Jane Eyre or Heathcliffe?

I could go on...
