Tell us a little about Jim Carruthers’ background.

Jim Carruthers is a Glaswegian DCI who has been working in London. He moves to Scotland to try to win back his estranged wife who has moved in with her parents in Fife. Carruthers’ father is dead and he has a mother and a brother. He had another brother who died as a teenager – a victim of a hit and run. Although he doesn’t talk about it much it hangs over his head like a shadow.
The Fields of Wheat moment…What is the most rebellious thing Jim has ever done?

Joined the police force against his family’s wishes. He’s a restless spirit, more so now his wife has left him. He’s a decent person and generally a good cop but prone to act a bit recklessly at times. He’s always butting heads with his Superintendent Bingham and is being reigned in by his side-kick, the younger Andrea Fletcher.

Which 3 items would Jim bring to a desert island … and why?

Casino Royale by James Bond. He loves the Bond books and is busy rereading them all when we meet him.

A bottle of Talisker whisky. He loves the malt from the Isle of Skye.

A pair of binoculars – he’s a secret bird watcher and lapsed member of RSPB

driving force and as we read the novels we come to understand why. When we first meet Carruthers he is grieving for the end of his marriage but his grief goes much deeper than his failed relationship. The victims can’t speak for themselves and he wants to get justice for the families involved.

Does Jim sleep well?

No, he’s a very light sleeper and frets a lot especially when working on a big case or when he’s had too much to drink!

Has Jim got regrets?

Yes,  by the second book he regrets he wasted so much time hating the police officer he blamed for his marriage break-up when it was his own jealousy that drove his wife away. He certainly regrets punching him in the first book as he’s threatened with demotion back to Detective Inspector. You’ll have to read the second book to find out what happens!

Have Sean Connery as Bond

Car chase or shoot out?

He loves speed so he’d probably say car chase and by the end of book 3 he’s already been in 2 shoot-outs!

Find out what Agatha Christie did when she

disappeared or discover Jack The Ripper’s true identity?

Knowing Carruthers he’d be interested in both. He loves a mystery but probably for him it would have to be discovering Jack the Ripper’s true identity
