Book Review: Lazy Blood by Ross Greenwood
Told over two time lines Lazy Blood is a stunning exploration of friendship, loyalty, secrets and serendipity from debut author Ross Greenwood.
It opens with Will being processed in prison after being convicted of murder. Pretty quickly we discover Will has friends who are keeping an eye out for him whilst he's in prison... and so the intrigue begins.
The second time line takes us back to Will's journey and we learn
of the relationship forged between four young boys on their first day at high school... a relationship that lasts through decades.
At times Lazy Blood exposes unpalatable truths about drug abuse, the penal system, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and its effects - it is all the stronger a read for this! It is unsettling and uncompromising in parts and I loved it for that. Greenwood's characters are so finely honed that Lazy Blood is an unputdownable read. His skill in making each of the four male main characters so distinct is enviable and he sustains this throughout the book.
Lazy Blood is very different form my usual crime fiction choice, but I found it refreshingly different and thoroughly enjoyed the journey. Watch out for the very unexpected twists at the end.
When's the next one due Ross?
