Book Review: Two books from Jeff Lindsay, the writer of Dexter, Tropical Depression and Red Tide

Forget Dexter, we've got Billy Knight.  Jeff Lindsay introduces his new character Billy Knight in a fantastic opening story for a new series.  Billy is an ex LA cop, who after suffering the death of his wife and child has escaped to Key West where he happily works as a fishing guide.

In Tropical Depression, Billy Knight still grieving the death
of his wife and child is asked to return to LA to investigate the racially motivated murder of a colleagues son.  Initially reluctant to comply Billy refuses however when his colleague is murdered Billy feels duty bound to return to his old stomping ground.  What made Tropical Depression so special for me was Lindsay's vivid characterisation combined with real 'chortle out loud' humour.  The action scenes took on a life of their own and Lindsay's style put me in mind of Harlan Coben's Myron Bolitar books.  A definite highly recommended from me.

Key West Florida

Red Tide, the second in the series sees us back in Key West with the welcome return of Billy's next door neighbour Nicky, who comes into his own in this novel.  Wth a new love interest in the form of refugee Anna, Billy is coerced by Nicky to investigate the frequent deaths by drowning around the Key West coastline of refugees.  Billy soon uncovers horrific plots that the police refuse to investigate.  Evocative , emotional and well written.
