Book Review: The Step Mother by Claire Seeber

The ducking and diving of the psychological thriller is what makes them so compelling and Seeber's The Stepmother is no exception.  The notion of the mind being tormented sometimes to the point of insanity draws the reader in.  In this book the traditional concept of the evil stepmother is challenged as Jeanie, determined to create a blended family, begins her new life, putting her past firmly behind her.

When Jeanie Randall is given a second chance at a fairy-tale ending, although initially reluctant , she grasps the opportunity with
both hands and marries Matthew king becoming stepmother to his twins Lucas and Scarlett.  Whilst optimistic about her new role Jeannie is faced with a series of events leaving her unsure of who to trust.  Could her new husband be behind the events that leave her isolated or is it his ex -wife or the twins or even her own son Frankie...?  As Jeannie becomes more fragile and insecure she encounters more and more mysteries and inconsistencies that lead her closer to the edge.
The Stepmother is a delightful play on the traditional fairy tale that is wholly engrossing.  The cast is intriguing and the various back stories serve beautifully as carrots to settle the reader deeper into the sofa to finish the book.
