Book Review: Two hot new releases by James Carol :Open Your Eyes (the new Jefferson Winter) and The Killing Game (an explosive standalone )

James Carol is releasing two books in the space of a week ... and I'm thrilled.  The first is the newest Jefferson Winter story from The Chronicles of Jefferson Winter (a novella) and the second a standalone dynamic thriller with an explosive edge.

Open Your Eyes (6th Oct 2016 Faber & Faber)

The young Jefferson Winter, new to the FBI and called to work with his mentor Yoko Tanaka, investigates the murder of three young girls who have their limbs amputated.  The dynamism between Tanaka and Winter is delicious but, for me, it's the insight into Winter as a younger man that is truly compelling.  The later Winter books (after he's left the FBI) are fantastic - his eccentric attitude, the demons he faces and his likeable character all draw the reader in.  In the Jefferson Winter chronicles we peep through the door and see the unformed Winter that we all know and love.  His genius is still apparent but he carries the arrogance of youth that is tempered , in later novels, by his experiences.  Open Your Eyes is highly recommended.

The Killing Game (13th Oct 2016 Bookouture) is the explosive latest stand alone thriller from James Carol, (writing as J S Carol) creator of the wonderful Jefferson Winter books.  As the title would suggest you won't be in for a quiet easy ride with this one.

When a 'suicide bomber' holds a posh restaurant and its extra rich clientele hostage, the world waits in thrall to discover what exactly the hostage taker wants. As the body count grows the situation looks more and more untenable.

Told from the point of view of  a news anchor man who is given close coverage of events, a young actor who escapes detection in the toilets and is slowly unravelling and JJ - who as a publicity spinner for the rich and elite knows that things will not end well and is determined to keep her head down.  When the hostage taker transfers money taken from his hostages to a very small charitable organisation  it becomes clear that this man is no ordinary terrorist.  But, what does he want?

With expertly placed clues along the way the reader becomes gradually aware of the underlying motivation of the hostage taker and this edge of the seat thriller takes unexpected twists and turns as we read.  Fans of high adrenalin action thrillers like those of Simon Kernick will love this.
