Blog Tour: Book Review of Shot To The Heart by Isabelle Grey (release date 24th March 2016)
When Russell Fewell opens fire on his ex-wife's boyfriend, ex-cop Mark Kirkby, on Christmas Day and then kills a further four people before killing himself, the identity of the murderer is not in doubt.
However, the repercussions from the shooting reverberate through the small community on the outskirts of Colchester. The shooter's young children are confused, his ex-wife bereaved and in shock and the victim's families are reeling at the randomness of the attack.
Whilst the powers that be want to make a martyr of ex- police officer Mark Kirkby, DI Grace Fisher becomes more and more discomfited as she investigates the life of a man capable of mass shooting. Journalist Ivo Sweatman shares, Fisher's disquiet and allies with her to further her investigation into the chain of events leading to the shooting.
Although no excuses are possible for the murders, Fisher and her team must do their best to make sense of what happened and why. How did the shooter, a normal man, get access to a rifle with cartridges that can eviscerate organs? What sent him over the edge to take such extreme action? and what, if any, links exist between Fewell's shootings and the stabbing of her friend and fellow officer Lance's boyfriend?
Shot Through The Heart explores the after effects of mass shooting on both the shooter's and the victim's families, but it goes further and also explores the effects on the families of those who also carry some culpability for the events, like the gun suppliers and ammunition producers.
Shot through the Heart is well written, thought provoking and refreshingly different. DI Grace Fisher's relationship with world weary journalist Ivo Sweatman is convincing.
Highly recommended by The Crime Warp.
