Book Review: The Promise by Alison Bruce, a police procedural with heart.

The Promise by Alison Bruce is a well written police procedural featuring DS Gary Goodhew and is set in Cambridge.  On sick leave following a work related injury Gary is enticed back to work after one of his informants , a homeless man named Ratty, is discovered murdered and mutilated.

Bruce casts an intriguing web of events linking the past and
the present.  With a compelling serial killer and a cast of well formed characters she produces an authentic variety of personalities to sustain the reader's attention from start to finish.

Gary's side kick Sue Gully is worthy of a mention as a strong, dynamic character with a mind of her own and the ability to get on with other officers.

The critical 'promise' is deliciously hidden till near the end of the book, which ends with the promise, (excuse the pun) of more exciting things to come.
If you like a good police procedural with an interestingly quirky lead detective, then The Promise is for you.
