Five Hot Tips For Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival In Harrogate
This year the Harrogate Crime Writing Festival offers panels and discussions ranging from discussions on Smartphones safety, Authors changing to the crime writing genre, self publishing, and  Special events featuring authors such as Denise Mina and Lynda La Plante.
The following are my 10 must go to panels for this year and are in no particular order. see more...
HOT TIP ONE
The New Blood Panel Sat 19th 12PM
Hosted as usual by Val McDermid this panel introduces four newly published authors.

Nicola White with In the Rosary Garden.  Set in Dublin of the 80's.

               Ray Celestin's The Axeman's Jazz
Set in New Orleans in 1919 based on a true story - the title alone draws me in.

Eva Dolan's Long Way Home
features a detective duo from Peterborough Hate Crimes Unit

Helen Giltrow's The Distance about a computer expert asked to do one final impossible task

This year I'm ahead of myself and intend to read all of them before Harrogate- look out for the reviews.

HOT TIP TWO
In Conversation with Robert Galbraith Friday 18th 7:30
(I know this is a pen name for someone famous but damned if I can remember who!!)
Seriously, love it or hate it, sceptical or fully embracing of it, prefer wizards to crime or whatever, you can't miss this!
JK Rowling chatting with Val McDermid will for many be the highlight of the festival.

HOT TIP THREE
The New Wave of Forensics Sat 19th 2PM
With acclaimed Dave Barclay (Author and leading police forensics expert) on the panel you can be sure our authors won't be allowed to slip up on the forensic front.  How to research forensics etc are on the mortuary slab to discuss

HOT TIP FOUR
Late Night Quiz- Sat 10PM
This is a great laugh with Val McDermid and Mark Billingham hosting.  Questions range from the obscure to the ridiculous to the mundane to the frankly macabre.

HOT TIP FIVE

The creator of Resnick meets the creator of Thorne - can't wait!!
Harvey has over 100 books to his name- we can learn from this man!

HOT TIP EIGHT
In Space No-one Can Hear You Scream Fri 18th 2PM
Panel about cross genre crime fiction.  I love the sci -fi /crime stuff and the supernatural/crime stuff

HOT TIP NINE
Worse things happen at home Fri 18th 3:30
Now this is going to really freak us out.  All that psychological fiction is addictive but mark my words this will be super scary

HOT TIP TEN
Let's Twist Again Fri 18th 10PM
This, led by Simon Kernick, will be enlightening.  How do authors come up with those twists and double and sometimes even triple twists that leave us on the edge of our seat?
