Book Review Sorrow Bound by David Mark

In Sorrow Bound McAvoy is reluctantly attending counselling after the events of the previous book (Original Skin). However, he remains typically silent till the last session when he reveals a long kept secret with repercussions for him and his family. Meanwhile, his wife makes an enemy of one of Hull's new coke dealers, also putting the family at risk.
The main plot begins when an obscure link is discovered between two very different murders. As the police investigate, the body count builds and McAvoy is forced to investigate events from the past that seem to surround an old disused mental health facility and a series of old crimes in Bridlington
Sorrow Bound is fast paced with a series of unexpected and pleasing twists along the way. One clever double twist at the end had me nodding sanctimoniously as, much to the cat's displeasure, I yelled approvingly "That's Justice for you, you B****!".
The ending also opens up a whole new range of possibilities for the next novel and I'm sure Mr Mark's devious mind is already working out how to entertain and shock us with his many and varied contortions.

So, it is for these reasons as well as the cracking good storylines, that I find myself fully absorbed in the series.
As a fairly new writer I think David Marks will soon be, if he isn't already, jogging up the ranks of the Crime Fiction Bestsellers and will be giving McDermid, McBride and Billingham a run for their money.
