Look out for these: January edition

Here’s my January post, highlighting some of the books I’ve got on my reading list.  I’ve stuck to just three this month to try and keep my reading list manageable, but these three novels are well worth looking out for.

Just out - The burning air by Erin Kelly
This novel centres on the MacBride family and the annual trip to their holiday home in Devon for bonfire night.  This year is unsettled as the family’s grandmother has just died, the eldest daughter Sophie’s marriage is on the rocks and the youngest son has brought his first girlfriend Kerry, with him.  Kerry offers to babysit Sophie’s daughter whilst the family go to the bonfire, but on their return, both Kerry and the baby are gone.  The story moves from present to past and back to the present, slowly and carefully revealing the family’s secrets and tragedies that have led to this frightening event.

February 2013 – Capture by Roger Smith
Set in South Africa, this book is about the developing relationship between Saul, a seedy ex detective, now a private security guard and Exley, a wealthy guilt ridden man who believes he is responsible for his daughter’s drowning.  The story is played out against a backdrop contrasts; Exley’s comfortable, affluent life and Saul’s world, which can best be described as one of utter depravity.  Saul, a master manipulator, uses the tragedy as a way to develop a friendship with Exley, but Saul’s motives are not what they seem to Exley who allows Saul to inveigle himself into his world.  What starts as a tentative friendship soon changes as Exley realises who Saul really is.

February 2013 – The carrier by Sophie Hannah
My daughter Helencrimeblogger is a big fan of Sophie Hannah’s particularly the way Hannah builds tension and suspense in her novels.  The theme of this book is a chance meeting of two strangers, Gaby and Lauren who share a hotel room because of a flight delay.  Lauren shares a secret with Gaby - an innocent man is going to prison for a murder he didn’t commit.  Guess what – Gaby knows both murderer and victim.  In fact she’s in love with the murderer!  This has been described as a “compulsive puzzle of a novel…that has you hooked from the very first page”.  I got a sneak preview of the first chapter and by the end of the second page I just wanted more.

I’ll be back in February with more hot picks to look forward to, meantime, happy reading.
