Look out for these!

This will be a regular column on the blog highlighting some of the books that I’ve got on my reading list that I think are worth looking out for.  It’s not a complete or comprehensive list of what’s being published, just my take on some stuff which I’d recommend watching out for

Already published
The Prisoner of Brenda (Colin Bateman) –latest in the hilarious series featuring the unbelievably bonkers detective – the Man With No Name.  Often under suspicion for his involvement in the crime in question, this time the Man With No Name is accused of being a double murderer.  The book promises of twists, turns and utter mayhem that will make you laugh out loud.

I Remember You (Yrsa Sigurdardottir) – A nice piece of offbeat Icelandic crime, which started with the slightly gruesome Last Rituals and now reached a fifth book.  Sigurdardottir paints an evocative picture of Icelandic life, often drawing on beliefs in elves, predictions through dreams, dead spirits and other supernatural phenomena, which are perhaps strange to us, but nevertheless create captivating and easy to read novels.

November 2012
Standing in Another Man’s Grave (Ian Rankin) – Just when you thought that Rebus was no more and Fox was starting to shape up into a strong character, Ranking blindsides us. - Yes! Rebus is back and tangling again with his nemesis Big Ger Cafferty.

December 2012
Western Approaches (Graham Hurley) – The start of a new series by Hurley through Jimmy Suttle, a smart and smart and sharp DS who was instrumental in bringing down a major Portsmouth crime lord in the Faraday and Winter series.  This first book sees Suttle’s move to the West Country for a quieter life.  Quieter? Really?

January 2013
Close to the Bone (Stuart MacBride) – after that gut wrenching ending in Shatter the Bones Logan (Lazarus) McRae is back for an eighth outing. Life is as dangerous as ever in Aberdeen and for McRae, the danger is getting closer and more personal than ever.

The Chosen Dead (M R Hall) – Hall has built a great character in Coroner Jenny Cooper, who constantly battles against authority as she stands up for truth and the underdog, however awkward her quest is.  The plot in this novel ranges further than before making Cooper’s quest for truth and justice harder than ever.
